Those lucky to be born with perfectly aligned teeth will never know the struggles of having to go through the process of correcting crooked teeth. However, with today’s advancements in dental and orthodontic technology, patients are given an easier route towards aligning teeth. The most common way of mending misaligned teeth is through the installation of braces (Calgary residents have different types of braces to choose). A lot of people often fail to distinguish the different types of braces and their features. Here’s a list of the types of braces, highlighting the right kind for each patient:

Conventional Or Traditional Braces

For years, traditional braces have been used by orthodontists to treat different cases of misaligned teeth. The materials used in the braces have also evolved, becoming lighter and more durable. The structure of traditional braces, however, remains the same, commonly made from high-grade stainless steel. The brackets are attached and cemented onto the teeth, securing them in place and applying pressure to align the teeth. A thin archwire connects the brackets together, which gradually positions the teeth. The arch wire is linked together by ligatures, which is made from colored elastics. These types of braces are commonly used by children and adults to this date.

Ceramic Braces

These braces work in a similar fashion as traditional braces, but with one distinct feature – clear brackets. With the brackets being clear, they are perfect for adults that need dental treatment. Unlike the traditional ones, ceramic braces are far less obtrusive and they don’t give off that awkward look that comes along with the conventional ones. However, there is one slight drawback to this type of braces and that’s the discoloration of the elastics, which can be removed by certain fluoride-based products.

Damon Braces

This type of braces is popular due to its functionality. Damon braces feature a self-ligating slide mechanism, which replaces the use of elastics. These braces also work faster and are more convenient. Cleaning the braces is also more convenient. With the self-ligating feature, the braces can be moved without the need for painful adjustments. The features of these braces lessen the need for dental appointments.

Removable And Clear Aligners

A more popular option among dental patients is the clear and removable aligners. Invisalign is a good example of clear aligners that straighten the teeth without the use of any metal pieces. These braces look like mouth clear guards that are custom made to fit the mouth of each patient perfectly. Comfort is assured with these braces as they do not have any areas that could hurt the teeth and gums. Clear aligners are also easily removed and cleaned, which makes them great for patients with an active and social lifestyle.

The usage of braces and aligners is recommended for both children and adults who have problems with teeth alignment. As early as 7 years old, children must see an orthodontist for necessary checkups. An early age is preferable to begin using braces as the treatment works best during the early years. Getting braces earlier also means patients will have perfect teeth when they grow up. However, the type of braces to be used will vary per patient. Some cases of misaligned teeth may be worse than others. Malocclusions may prove to be difficult to med in some cases, which will require a different set of braces. It’s important to consult with an orthodontist early on for the best results.
